About the Drepung Monastery, Lhasa, Tibet, China:
In 1416 the Drepung Monastery was founded (in Chinese which is Zhebang Si and in Tibetan which is Drepung Gompa) what is located on the outskirts of Lhasa once the most influential and largest monastery of Tibet, more than 10,000 monks with. Today about 700 monks houses the Drepung Monastery and from around the whole world the visitors and pilgrims attracts. For the annual Shoton Festival as the site is known especially the Drepung, on the hillside a painting of a giant thangka unfurling which is dramatic.

The history of the Drepung Monastery:
By the Jamyang Choeje of Tsongkapa’s disciple in 1416 was founded the Drepung Monastery. In the 17th century before was built the Potala Palace for the Dalai Lamas it was the home. From a distance a heap of white rice resembling, in Tibetan as the Drepung Gompa which means the “Monastery of the Collecting-Rice” it was dubbed.
