About Coba, Mexico
On the Yucatan Peninsula Coba was one of the most important ruin sites, archaeologist believe that. From other Mayan cities was very different the purpose and the design of this settlement. In one area there are many settlement located. From each settlement to the main pyramid, Nohoch Mul the white road leads.
History of Coba
‘Waters stirred by the wind’ is the meaning of Coba, as this settlement is surrounded by two large lagoons Coba is an appropriate Mayan name for this place. Due to its location Coba was an ignored piece of Mayan history for many years. Between the State of Quintana Roo’s Tulum and Yucatan State’s Valladolid the settlement of Coba is located. In the mid-1800s about the site archaeologist first learned, but made this site a difficult area to explore the Caste War, lack of funds and the dense jungle. In the Yucatan making it a true wonder because is still largely unexcavated this Mayan site.
There are the original sacbe (white roads) and the visitors can enjoy the shaded walkways, once a large city show the vast area and the architecture by the three settlements, in the Yucatan climb the highest pyramid the Nohoch Mul and explore the 2 ball courts. Since the early 90’s the visitors visits this site and by this settlements still now fascinated. In 1973 as an archaeological site to the public Coba was finally opened. 6,000 structures exist the archaeologist have estimated that, but for the public viewing only three settlements are allowing the authority. From the Ek Balam, Chichen Itza and from Tulum what make this site different that is Coba is a large group of sites which connected to the central pyramid, Coba is not a single site. Each site connected to the central pyramid by the white roads (sacbeob) by over 16 Mayan ceremonial. The Nohoch Mul (main pyramid, Macanxoc structures (which bears the same name close to the lagoon) and the Conjunto Pinturas (spiritual area) are the main three areas which can be viewed by the visitors. If the visitors walk into the site the visitors day in the Coba can last up to two and a half hours, if the visitors take the bicycle rental advantage it take one and a half hours or if the visitors take the Mayan limo in an hour they can explore the site. Mayan Limo is a chauffeured tricycle where the visitor just sit and can explore the sites. For the visitors both the option of bicycle are super fun and also inexpensive.
Nohoch Mul Pyramid
This is the mains structure and also the most popular one at the Coba. Nohoch Mul means the large hill, the height of this pyramid is 42 meters (about 137 feet). This pyramid have 120 steps to a remarkable view of the Yucatan which leads the visitors and also the visitors can see the non-public areas of the Coba such as to the southwest the Coba Lagoon and to the east the Macanxoc Lagoon.
The Macanxoc Group
Following one of the Sacbes (white roads) the Macanxoc Group is found in the past which was the Conjunto de Pinturas. Numerous altars and 8 stelaes this area has. This area was of the spiritual significance in the Mayan period to the area shows that the vast numbers of stelaes.
