The World Heritage Sites in Kyoto –
Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto under the group of designation on UNESCO’s World Heritage List were inscribed 17 historic sites in 1994. In Kyoto itself are the fourteen of the listed sites, in the neighboring city Uji there are two and in Otsu there is one.
The fourteen World Heritage Sites of Kyoto are –
● The Northern Kyoto – Kamigamo Shrine, Shimogamo Shrine, Kinkaku-ji, Ninna-ji, Ryoan-ji and Kozan-ji.
● The Southern Kyoto - Daigo-ji
● The Eastern Kyoto – Ginkaku-ji and Kiyomizu-dera
● The Western Kyoto – Koke-dera and Tenryu-ji
● The Central Kyoto – Nishi Hongan-ji, To-ji and Nijo Castle
At Kyoto the Imperial Palaces and Villas –
For the Imperial Palace through the regal retreats stroll or with the gardens one of the two Imperial Villas and the teahouse by the Imperial Household Agency are managed. There are some Imperial Palaces and Villas in different districts of the Kyoto. These are –
● In Central Kyoto – The Sento Imperial Palace (the Sento-gosho) and the Imperial Palace (the Kyoto-gosho)
● In Western Kyoto – The Katsura Imperial Villa (the Katsura-rikyu)
● In Northern Kyoto – The Shugakuin Imperial Villa (the Shugaku-in-rikyu)
Through the Imperial Household Agency by reservation to the public are open all four of these sites. Within the precincts of each palace are located the gardens and during the spring cherry blossom season and in autumn are at their most scenic the villas where enchant the visitor a riot of colors. For official state functions from time to time or by the current royal family members for private visits is still used each property.
