About the Holy Mosque, Mecca, Saudi Arabia:
In Mecca Saudi Arabia the Holy Mosque also known as the Al-Masjid al-Haram, Haram al-Sharif, al-Haram Mosque and the Haram in the world the holiest mosque and of the Hajj pilgrimage the primary destination. An area of 356,800 square meters cover the mosque complex and during the Hajj up to 820,000 worshipers can accommodate. No Qibla direction that has is the only mosque in the world the Holy Mosque, since in the central courtyard facing the Kaaba Muslims pray.
The history of the Holy Mosque:
In the 7th century was built the Haram and ever since on a larger basis has been expanded, modified and rebuilt. In the 1980s took place the major expansions and still today is going on the further work.
Under the Caliph Omar Ibn al-Khattab (from 634 to 644) were established of the Holy Mosque the beginning. The growing number of pilgrims in order to accommodate the surrounding houses of the Kaaba the demolition order the Caliph, then around the shrine an outdoor prayer area to form a 1.5 meter high wall was built. The Caliph Uthman Ibn Affan (from 644 to 656) during the reign, was enlarged the prayer area and supported by arches and wooden columns with a simple roof covered.
In 692 from Ibn Zubayr conquered Mecca after the Caliph Abdul Malik bin Marwan, embellished and enlarged was the building, were raised the outer walls, with the teak was covered the ceiling and in gold were painted the capitals. With the marble ones replaced the wooden columns the al-Walid (from 705 to 715) the son of Caliph and with mosaics its arches decorated. To the columns added the mosaics Abu Jafar al-Mansur who was the Abbasid Caliph, of the prayer hall the western and northern wings doubled the size and on the northwest corner the minaret of Bab al-Umra erected.
In 777, the growing number of pilgrims to accommodate under the Abbasid Caliph al-Mahdi (from 775 to 785) took place a major rebuild. In the area with more houses along was demolished the existing mosque and in its place was constructed a new mosque. 196 by 142 meters measuring, from Syria and Egypt with the marble columns on a grid plan it was built with wooden inlay of gilt teak. Three minarets also included the mosque of al-Mahdi, Bab al-Wadi, Bab Ali and Bab al-Salam placed above.
By fire was severely damaged of the mosque the northern part in 1399 and from water damage were suffered the remaining sections. By the Mamluk Sultan Nasir Faraj bin Barquq (from 1399 to 1405) was rebuilt subsequently the mosque. From the nearby Hijaz region quarried with the stone columns were replaced the marble columns which damaged and from the Taif Mountains with the local wood was parched the roof.
The Holy Mosque to renovate the court architect Sinan commissioned the Ottoman Sultan Selim II (from 1566 to 1574) in 1571. Mostly dates that the present building it is from that renovation.
