Geological origin of the Kata Tjuta:
Rising from the desert plains lies in the Amadeus Basin the region surrounding Kata Tjuta, during the Adelaidian an intracratonic basin formed, mya roughly 850-800. Approximately 550 mya during the Petermann Orogeny, known as the Woodroff Thrust an event, over low-grade metamorphic rocks thrust granulite facies rocks northward. Resulted in a molasses facies the eventual erosion of the formation, or in front of rising mountains the deposition, the Petermann Orogeny in this case, known as the Mount Currie Conglomerate to create the deposit. By the predominately of basalt, gnesis, granite, porphyry, volcanic rock fragments among other minerals angular quartz, orthoclase and microcline with a matrix composed the Mount Currie Conglomerate is made.
In this Mount Currie Conglomerate are made of sediment originating are made of both the Kata Tjuta and Uluru and similar to granite both have a chemical composition. Matching the date of the Woodroof Thrust event have given it an age of 600 mya to accurately date the rock scientist using the Rb/Sr dating. With green or pink hues in some laminae is medium to dark gray the actual fresh rock that makes up in the Olgas and Uluru. For which the structure are notable the bright orange-red hue, in iron oxide finely divided feldspar is due to a patina over.
