Shrine of Imam Ali: The tomb of Imam Ali

About Shrine of Imam Ali, Najaf, Iraq:
In southern Iraq Najaf is a holy city of Shi’s Muslim which is about 160 kilometers south of the Baghdad. In the world after Mecca and Medina is the third holiest shrine is the Imam Ali Mosque in Najaf.


The history of Shrine of Imam Ali:
In 632 AD after the death of the Prophet Muhammad, as the leader who should succeed him broke out over a conflict. It should be the Prophet’s dependents some (Called the Shi’ites later) said, while other argued (the Sunnis) that a leader should choose the community. The matter was complex as in all conflicts, but the separation between the Shi’s and Sunni Islam which has endured still today this was the essential difference.


The tomb of Imam Ali the gold plated mosque shelters, who is revered as a martyr the son-in –law of the Prophet Muhammad and by the Shi’ites a saint. Since Imam Ali’s death in 661 AD for Shi’ites for pilgrimage Najaf has been an important place. In 661 at Najaf the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, Imam Ali was killed in the course of the conflict. Among the Prophet’s closest relative Imam Ali was one of them and as the Prophet’s true successor the one whom the Shi’ites saw, and as a great saint and martyr he is regarded.


Since as early as 750 AD has been honored the tomb of Imam Ali at Najaf, although in Afghanistan he is actually buried it is possible. For pilgrimage became an important place the Najaf and of the Shi’s religious learning a center. More to Qom in Iran the later role has shifted in the 20th century. It is said that, by Dawood Bin Ali Al-Abbas at Najaf around 750 AD the tomb of Imam Ali have been discovered. In 977 over the tomb by Azod Eddowleh a shrine was built, but burned down later time. In 1086 by the Seljuk Malek Shah it was rebuilt, and by Ismail Shah rebuilt yet again, in about 1500 the Safawid.


What to see at the Shrine of Imam Ali:
The Imam Ali Mosque which is also known as the tomb of Imam Ali or as Meshed Ali is the central focus of Najaf. Over the tomb and the shrine of Imam Ali the mosque was built. To the tomb of Imam Ali many Shi’a bring their dead, before burial around the sarcophagus carrying the coffin.


In gold the mosque is resplendent, covering the dome with 7,777 pure gold tiles and there are two golden minarets, their height are 35 meters each and with 40,000 gold tiles each of them were built. With the opulence typical of Shi’a mosque the interior of the mosque decorated, reflecting off mirrored tiles with neon lights and the silver walls hammered. Donated by the sultans and by other devotees sheltered in the mosque often looted the treasury of the precious objects.


Several other shrines Najaf includes, among them includes a mosque where Imam Ali was martyred. For Sufi mystics there are also cells which have formed there’s monastic communities. The largest cemetery in the Muslim world and the entire world perhaps the ‘Wadi as-Salam’ also known as ‘Wadi of Peace’ located north of the Shrine of Imam Ali. Many tombs of several prophets it contains.
