Cave Church & Dihany Street Synagogue: Two historical and tragic site in Budapest

The Cave Church, Budapest, Hungary:
In Budapest overlooking Liberty Bridge which also known as the Szabadsaq Hid on Gellert Hill is located the Cave Church, by the Hungarian Pauline order of monks cared for a unique grotto chapel is the Cave Church. During the years of Communist was closed, reopened it has been since then and from the noise of the city offers a peaceful respite.

To Saint Istvan was originally home this cave of Gellert Hill, in front of the cave that sprung with thermal waters who cured the sick a hermit monk was the Istvan. By expanding the hermit’s cave in 1926 was founded the Cave Church. To hold more worshippers by the Archbishop of Kaloccsa in the 1930s was further enlarged the church, as a model using the Grotto at Lourdes.

The entire order of Pauline monks arrested the Communist secret police in 1951. To death was condemned the superior Ferenc Vezer, while 5 to 10 years prison sentences the other received. With a 2.25 meter thick concrete wall was blocked up the chapel, for nearly 40 years it stood silent behind that wall.

In 1989 after the fall of Communist, to the Pauline monks was returned the Cave Church and reopened immediately.

A small interior has the Cave Church with the rock walls which are natural and with statues and altars filled various niches, is peaceful and atmospheric place. During a service when music is played for a memorable experience make the acoustics of the cave. Outside, of Liberty Bridge there are fine views and holding a church of St. Istvan a modern statue.

The Dihany Street Synagogue, Budapest, Hungary:
The Dihany Street Synagogue (Dohany utcai Zsinagoga in Hungarian language) was built in 1859 which also known as the Great Synagogue or the Dohany Synagogue, located in Budapest, in Europe is the largest synagogue and in New York City after Temple Emanu-el in the world the second largest.

After the plans of Ludwig Forster Jewish who wasn’t in 1854 to 1859 was built the Dihany Street Synagogue. About 30,000 of Pest numbered in this area the Jewish community at the time. To have a rich but tragic history would go on the Dihany Street Synagogue.

For the Jewish subsequent and ghetto deportations to supervise the establishment with the occupying Nazi forces in Budapest Adolf Eichmann arrived in March 1944. In the women’s balcony behind the rose window Eichmann had an office for a time.

During the war inside the synagogue complex took refuge up to 20,000 Jews, but during the bleak winter of 1944 to 1945 7,000 people perished. In the courtyard are buried these victims, a piece of original brick ghetto wall where you can also see. Many windows were broken and the synagogue boarded up the Jews during the Communist period. Recently was completed an ambitious restoration finance by famous American’s Estee lauder and Tony Curtis.

Like a basilica was designed the Great Synagogue and some striking elements of Moorish and Byzantine was included. Vast and ornate is the interior, with an unusually organ and two balconies. During the Holocaust destroyed from the other synagogues taken the torah scrolls and not its ark contains 25 of them.

During the Second World War who died in memory of thousands of Jews there is the Jewish Heroes’ Mausoleum and Temple next to the main building. In the synagogue complex is also situated the National Jewish Museum.
