About the Shrine of Imam Husayn, Karbala, Iraq:
In the south-central Iraq Karbala which also spelled as the Kerbela or Kerbala is a renowned city, from the Baghdad about 100 kilometer southwest. After Mecca, Medina and Najaf in Shi’a Islam it is one of the holiest city. Because it is the site of the Shrine of Imam Husayn which also spelled as the Imam Hussain or as the Imam Husayn and that’s why Karbala is important. Imam Husayn was a much revered Shi’a martyr and of the Prophet Muhammad the grandson. The loyal half-brother of Husayn’s to the Shrine of Abbas it is also home.
The history of the Shrine of Imam Husayn:
In 632 AD of the Prophet Muhammad after the death, as leader of Islam who should succeed him over it a conflict broke out. It should be the descendants of the Prophet’s some said that who later called as the Shi’ites, while argued that the other who later called as the Sunnis that a leader should choose the community. The matter was complex as in all conflicts, but between Shi’a and Sunni Islam that led to the separation this was the basic difference to this day that has endured still.
In 680 AD in the Battle of Karbala along with many followers at Karbala was martyred the Imam Husayn during this conflict. Immediately after his murder became a place of pilgrimage the Imam Husayn’s tomb. To the Hajj was equal a pilgrimage to Karbala that even argued the extreme devotees. From oppression for religious suffering and liberation as a powerful symbol was regarded the death of Husayn then as now.
In 684 AD over the Husayn’s tomb a mosque was built, and have been built a succession of mosques and to this day destroyed on the site. In 749 with another dome was enlarged the original mosque but in 787 was destroyed. A sepulcher of teak wood was constructed for Husayn’s tomb in 977. In the 11th century was built the present mosque, for the wall with extensive reconstruction and in the 14th century reconstructed the dome.
The themes of Karbala and Ashura have regarded the Sunni rulers as a potential threat and several times banned the pilgrimages, Saddam Hussein was among them and the Shrines which always have been rebuilt even destroyed. By the Iraqi army were plundered and damaged the richly endowed the shrines of Karbala in 1991. 66 prayer halls, 32 mosques and 10 religious schools were destroyed brutally against Saddam Hussein after the city rebelled.
From power with Saddam removed even, to be a focus of sectarian conflict has continued the Karbala. Since from the power in Iraq Saddam was removed the second Shi’a pilgrimage to Karbala in the 2004, by the bomb attacks was marred, hundreds of people that wounded and killed.

From the Shrine of Imam Husayn to the Shrine of Abbas leads a tree lined wide avenue, Abbas was the half-brother of Husayn and the commander of the army in the Battle of Karbala who died with Husayn. To Husayn for his loyalty and in the battle for the bravery by the Shi’as is revered the Hadrat Abbas. With the precious metals and materials is also highly decorated the tomb of Abbas.
