Bern Munster: Tallest collegiate church in Switzerland

About the Bern Munster, Bern, Switzerland:
From 1421 dates the unique Bern Munster. Like a great Gothic rocket looking a bit, in the country the tallest spire boasts this former cathedral. Some important medieval art it also shelters, which includes over the portal the painted sculptures and glass windows of fine stained.

The history of the Bern Munster:
Probably was a small chapel on this site the first church, the Bern was founded (about 1191) built around the time. In 1224 is first recorded its existence.

On 1421, March 11, to take its place on a monumental new cathedral began construction master builder Matthaus. From the Strasbourg originally, three other cathedrals had already built the Ensinger. Large numbers of worshipers could accommodate the huge new church, at the time in Bern lived yet only 5,000 people.

On the Munster worked continued, for over a century using the local sandstones. Until 1893 fully completed it was not, when was added the bell tower. The Bern become had Protestant in the meantime and now the Bern Munster (the collegiate church) was the Berner Dom (the cathedral) before.

At the Bern Munster what to see:
Over the main portal of the Last Judgment the magnificent deception is the most exceptional feature in the Bern Munster, more than 200 carved stone and wood figures which contains. In Europe is a rare survival of late Gothic sculpture such a large collection. 15th century originals are the 170 smaller figures and replicas are the freestanding statues which number are 47 and in the Bern Historical Museum were preserved the originals.

The center occupies the justice, by the Foolish and Wise Virgins and angels flanked. The Archangel Michael is above, with the scales and sword. On the left are the saved and on the right are the damned. In Protestant Switzerland is rare of religious images such a significant survival, but of salvation the graphic depictions apparently and from destruction to spare it to the Reformers appealed enough the damnation.

In the Bern Munster the immense interior the lacy ceiling vault (from 1572 to 1573) features, with the diagonally placed square pillars a long nave, and flanked by small chapels two side aisles. The Dance of Death is the most remarkable window in the Bern Munster, at the top of the right aisle found in the Matter Chapel. On the equality and inevitability of death as a lesson, across the glass grinning skeletons dance from all walks of life while harassing people.


With prophets and from everyday life the images carved the choir stalls, from the 1520 dates it. By saints roof bosses, the Reformation survived Mary, Christ and others, probably because to reach they were too high.

In Switzerland is the highest the Bern Munster 100 meters (300 feet) bell tower. In 1611 was cast the 10.5 ton bell of the Bern Munster and in Switzerland is the largest. There are also Moses Fountain which built in 1545 and Munsterplattform above the river Aare which is a terrace and was built from 1334 to 1434 what you can explore during your visit.
