About Bergama (Pergamum), Izmir, Turkey
Turkeys one of the major archaeological site is the Bergama (Pergamum) from Izmir which is 100 km (62 miles) north and from Canakkale 250 km (155 miles) south, for its great library and for medical practice where Galen laid the foundation as the medical center it was renowned.
History
During the second century BC Pergamum was an important kingdom, captured by Alexander the Great from a city-state having grown. In 323 BC upon the Alexander’s death, for control of the parts of his empire his generals fought. For the Aegean coast Lysimachus took the command but in281 BC he was killed, in the control of Philetarus the Eunuch leaving the Pergamum, to increase his power who used Lysimachus’s treasure.
On their inheritance built the Philetarus’s nephew and heris, and king of Pergamum Eumenes II (197-159 BC) in Anatolia became the most powerful ruler. By building the Altar of Zeus he beautified his capital, on the slope of the Acropolis in the middle city by constructing numerous buildings, and by beautifying the medical center of Asclepion and expanding it.
Attalus III was not his father’s equal who was the son of Eumenes II. Declined the power of Pergamum’s and in 129 BC on Attalus’s death, was willed to Rome the kingdom of Pergamum and province of Asia (minor) its became. The city of Roman Pergamum was still an important and rich city. There are some important monuments which date from the Roman times such as the Temple of Trajan.
Information for visitors
For farming, schools, gold mining, light industry and tourism of course the modern Bergama is a center. It’s a vast city. From the north south highway it’s 7 km (4.35 miles) and around the Bergama Muzesi the archaeological museum to the center is the bus terminal. So to reach the hotel the visitors may have to take the taxis from the bus terminal. It’s another 5.35 km (3.3 miles) of the lofty Acropolis to the summit from the museum.
From Izmir guided tours are available, or from Istanbul visitors can visit on a 6 day self-guided driving tour to Bergama. Between the Canakkale and Ephesus on their itinerary to see sights stop the visitors but if the visitors decide to spend the night there Bergama does have some suitable hotels.
From Izmir on a day trip most travelers visit, on the highway nearby while some passing. Among the visitors a small number of them stay in Bergama at night. Then by bus to the Bergama by the fast ferry to Bursa or Bandirma is the best way to reach Bergama from Istanbul.
A long spread out city is the modern Bergama, to the west of the city passes the north south Izmir Canakkale E87 highway which located near the coast of Aegean.

According to the Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture 536,000 people visit this city every year. The city of Bergama’s closest major city is now the Izmir. This city has an ancient culture of Hellenistic, about 800 feet above the valley whose acropolis rises and this city includes a Greek theater, with 200,000 volumes a library and a marble temple of Athena and Trajan.
