Other ruins
Passing the monuments and treasuries which commemorates great events the sacred way leads to the temple. With statues and gifts this road was lined in the ancient time in thanks for victories in battle in tribute to Apollo given by the city state. It has been reconstructed the treasury of the Athenians. In Greece When the visitor’s favorite island was one of the wealthiest areas since it is a reminder of that period and become the visitor’s favorite the Treasury of the Sifniots. In the archaeological museum is now the frieze of the treasury many artifacts along with which includes the sculptured cone in the extra center of the world which stood, the omphalos and Charioteer’s the famous bronze statue, in the world of ancient art one of the most celebrated pieces.
There are the temple of Pronoia Athena below these ruins, as Marmaria also known, or because of the nearby laying abundance of ancient stones the marbles supposedly. On the site probably the most widely recognized building is the Tholos because of the fact that it is a round shape temple and because of the color of the marbles of this temple which is not so much common in Greece. This temple is mysterious because it is not known that what the temple was used for and who it commemorates. The Gymnasium is the beyond and to train the athletes which were used the Palaiastra in the Pythian Games who compared, to commemorate the Apollo’s victory over the Python every four years was held. Before consulting the oracle where the pilgrims washed themselves is the Castelian spring and for thousands of years from it still flows the crystal clear water.
Fall of Delphi
The sanctuary of the Delphi was the part of the Amphictyonia from the 7th BC and until the 4th BC at least. From many invaders the Amphictyonia alliance protected the site, and it preserved the Phocians above all from controlling it who lived in the surrounding land. In 356 BC with the Athenians and the Spartans the Phocians allied and captured the sanctuary of the Delphi, and from the precious offerings they stripped the temples to finance their war in desperate need. Until the King Philip of Macedon liberated the sanctuary only for a short time they held control of the grounds.
Against the Amphictyonic alliance once again Philip interfered in 339 BC when on Apollo’s sacred grounds the Krissans trespassed. The Krissans were finished by the Philip and defeated the combined army of the Athenians and the Spartans consequently in 338 BC, thus in Greek affairs becoming the dominant force.
In 191 BC into the Roman hands the sanctuary of Delphi fell, and in 86 BC in order to finance the siege of Athens was stripped the treasures of the sanctuary by General Sylla, and by the Thracian Maedi was razed the Delphi three years later who legend has the sacred fire it extinguished and uninterrupted for centuries had been burning.
By the Romans revivals despite some building, over the next few centuries the Oracle of Delphi lost its influence and imported from the East: Christianity by a new religion as Apollo’s worship was replaced was gradually extinguished its spiritual fire.
