Herculaneum: The city with same fate of Pompeii (Part – 2)

The Terme Maschili
One of the main street of Herculaneum the Decumano Inferiore just across of it, in the Terme del Foro (Forum Baths) were the men’s section in the Terme Maschili. Before the visitors step into the apodyterium (changing room) note that to the left of the entrance the ancient latrine, for waiting patrons complete with bench and for sandal and toga storage a nifty wall shelf. To the left into the frigidarium (cold bath) would pop while those after a bracing soak, to the right into the tepadarium the less stoic headed straight. Mount Vesuvius’s catastrophic eruption to the seismic activity preceding the sunken mosaic floor of here is the testament. As well as an exercise area lies the caldarium beyond this room.


The Decumano Massimo
Into the Decumano Massimo turn right at the end of Cardo III. With the shops this ancient high street, still adorn the walls the fragments of the advertisement, such as of the Casa Del Salone Nero that to the right. From to the weight of the goods to their price listed this ancient consumer information. Along Decumano Massimo further to the east, in an upstairs room of the Casa del Bicentenario (the Bicentenary House) found a crucifix, in the pre-Vesuvius Herculaneum of a Christian presence provides possible evidence.


The Casa del bel Cortile & Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite
From Decumano Massimo turning into Cardo IV, the Casa del Bel Cortile (the House of the Beautiful Coutryard) the visitors will hit. In 1980 by the archaeologist on the ancient shore 300 skeletons discovered inside there lie. In the last and terrifying moments of their lives to see the assumed mother, father and child huddled together it’s still a poignant sight almost two millennia later.


The Casa di Nettuno e Anfitrite (the House of Neptune and Amfitrite) awaits to the next door, in the nymphaeum (fountain and bath) from the extraordinary an aristocratic pad taking its name. In which are depicted the sea god and his nymph bride in the warm colors hint at how lavish once have been must the original interior.

Along Cardo IV further southwest a quick walk leads the visitor to the women’s section of the Terme del Foro, named the Terme Femminili. Than its male equivalent though smaller, fine floor mosaics it boasts, in the apodyterium (changing room) note the naked figure of Triton which were beautifully executed.


Getting Herculaneum & away:
There are also many more ruins in this small city for the visitors to explore like the Casa del tramezzo di Lengo, Casa dell’Atrio a Mosaico, Casa dei Cervi and Terme Suburbane etc. According to the Soprintendenza Archeologica de Pompei annually 320,549 tourist come to this small ancient Roman city. By the Circumvesuviana train (from Naples or Sorrento €2.10) if the visitors travelling to the scavi (ruins), at Ercolano- Scavi station get off and to the ruins walk 500 meters downhill, via the IV Novembre, down the main street for the Scavi follow the signs. On your right the visitors will pass the tourist office in the En route.
