Abbey of St. Florian: The tombs of Christian martyr

About Abbey of St. Florian, Sankt Florian, Austria:
In the Upper Austria the largest monastery is the Abbey of St. Florian in German Stift St. Florian, for the Baroque architecture and art which is an impressive example. For St. Florian it is also the shrine, against the fire and wood the patron saint and of the firefighters therefore the patron, under the church whose grave lies. In the town of is located the Abbey of St. Florian, from the outside Linz it is 12 miles away and from there by the public transport it is accessible.


The history of Abbey of St. Florian:
In the Enns River around 304 AD by drowning St. Florian was executed who was a Christian martyr and a Roman official. Against the flood and fire he is the patron saint of protection because of his watery death. Around 800 over the site of his grave was built the first Abbey of St. Florian, by the Bishop of Passau in 1071 it was given to the Augustinians. Between 1686 and 1751 from a Baroque rebuilding the present building dates.


As a young man at Abbey of St. Florian the Anton Bruckner (1824-96) who was a great composer was the organist. Here he wrote many of his masterpieces. As a great success in Vienna he spent most of his life, but at the Abbey of St. Florian he wished to be buried beneath of his organ. The room where he lived as well as his tomb can be visited.


At Abbey of St. Florian what to see:
The Abbey of St. Florian has three towers in the long, yellow and white west face, on the church there are two which are 260 feet high and over the elaborated doorway of Baroque there is the another one. For the Fountain of the Eagle the inner court is well known.


Around 140,000 books and manuscripts the Abbey of St. Florian library contains and by Bartolomeo Altomonte with frescoes of allegorical subjects its celling is decorated. For a visit to Abbey of St. Florian is a major highlight is the Altdorfer Gallery, by the 16th century painter Albrecht Altdorfer here the famous works are displayed, with his contemporary, Albrecht Durer the painter is often compared.


To the imperial Apartments (Kaiserzimmer) a fine staircase leads, many other plush room of many emperors, empresses, royal members and have lodged at least one pope who was Pius VI. From the Salzburg area the columns of pink marble features the Abbey of St. Florian church and the stucco decoration lavish. In the black marble is the pulpit and carved, ornamented and gilded are the choir stalls.


Including a surprising stack of the bone which in 1291 was discover the crypt is full of burials, of about 6,000 people comprising the skeletons, of the early Christians near the saint who were buried they are said to be this remains. Including large Gothic tomb of abbot Peter Maurer (1525) in the crypt there are more traditional burials, displayed in the niches coffins of more abbots, and under the organ the simple tomb of Anton Bruckner. Down here there are also visible the foundations of the Gothic church and the fragments of the Roman walls.
