About Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil:
In 1931 Christ the Redeemer was completed and the height of Christ the Redeemer is 120 feet, the Christ the Redeemer (O Cristo Redentor) which situated in Rio de Janiero among the statues of Christ in the world is the second largest. One of the New Seven Wonders of the World in 2007 it was named.
The history of Christ the Redeemer:
Dates back to 1850s atop Corcovado peak in Rio the idea of placing a large Christian monument when from the Princess Isabel to build one a local Catholic priest requests funds. Enthusiastic was not the princess and in 1889 with the founding of the Republic of Brazil the plan was scrapped entirely, the church and state which separated.
Began to collect signatures the Catholic Circle in Rio in 1921 and also started collecting donations for a Christian monument which was privately funded. There were considered various designs, which includes a large cross and holding a globe a statue of Christ, but an image of the Christ with his arms wide open ultimately was chosen.
In 1922 the construction began. By the local engineer Heitor da Silva Costa was designed the statue of the Christ the Redeemer and by Paul Landowski who was a Frenchman sculpted from concrete and soapstone. On October 12, 1931 after nine years and a total cost of $250,000 for the people the statue was opened.
In 2006 to celebrate the 75th anniversary of Christ the Redeemer, a chapel was built at the base what was dedicated to the patron saint of Brazil Nossa Senhora Aparecida. During a major electronic storm in February 2008 the statue was struck by lightning, but due to the insulating properties of soapstone escaped from any damage.
What to see at the Christ the Redeemer:
In a welcoming gesture with the arms spread wide Cristo Redentor (Christ the Redeemer) depicts Christ, as the redeemer of the world representing his role. Including the pedestal it stands 120 feet high and the Christ the Redeemer is 98 feet wide. From the concrete and soapstone made of and in a modern style was sculpted, a total of 635 tons are the weight of Christ the Redeemer.
Over 2,000 feet high standing on a peak, over the city of Rio de Janeiro for the magnificent views the Christ the Redeemer is famed. On Sundays hosts weeding’s, Mass and baptisms at the base of the statue on the small Chapel of Nossa Senhora Aparecida. Near the statue there is a cafĂ©.
How to get there:
In the southern part of Rio de Janeiro on Corcovado peak which height is 710 meters/2329 feet is located the Christ the Redeemer. By road and a cog railway (3.8 kilometers) the monument is accessible, along the way the transport provides the fine views. To reach the statue visitors have a choice of 220 steps or a system of elevators from the train terminus or from the parking lot. At about 6:15pm from Corcovado the last train departs.
