About the Church of Our Lady Victorious, Prague, Czech Republic:
From all around the world for many pilgrims in Prague the Church of Our Lady Victorious in Czech ‘Kostel Panny Marie Vitezne and also known as the Church of Our Lady Victory is a destination, to the Infant Jesus of Prague who come to pay homage. Originally come from Spain the statue of the Infant Jesus and by believers from the Hispanic countries is especially venerated.
The history of the Church of Our Lady Victorious:
In 1611 began the construction of the church, for Czech Lutherans the church was built and to the Holy Trinity was dedicated. In 1620 of the White Mountain the Catholic won the Battle (between the Protestants and Catholics during the Thirty Years War fought) and were forbidden all Protestant faiths. Therefore the king to the Carmelites Order gave the church and to “Our Lady of Victory” the dedication was changed, during the Battle of the White Mountain to have helped the Catholic army after the holy picture of Our Lady which was believed.
Only few years later in 1628 came to the church the statuette of the Infant Jesus. According to the legends the statue was belonged to the St. Teresa of Avila. By Duchess Maria Manrique de Lara the Infant Jesus was bought to Prague, of the Spanish princess who was the maid of honor, and the Spanish princess was the Czech king’s bride. A traditional wedding gift was the statue from mother to daughter which was to have been handed down.
At the Church of Our Lady Victorious what to see:
The main altar faces west and this is the special feature of this church, so that instead of the park into the main street the entrance heads. It faced east originally, of most churches as in the cases, but when the church devolved to the Carmelites was changed the orientation.
At right hand side the Altar of the Infant Jesus is situated, from the church entrance second. In a glass case in the center of the altar is displayed the statue of the Infant Jesus of Prague. The height of the statue is 45 cm, made from the wax and when Jesus was only a few years old represents him. In a royal robe the statue is dressed, according to the church year it differs, there has also a crown. By the statue of Our Lady and St. Joseph the altar is surrounded. In the upper part of the altar as an old man allegorically represented God the Father. In the form of a dove the Holy Spirit hovers right at the top. With thanks for the miracles the Infant Jesus performed beside the altar there are tables.
A form of a victory arch has the main altar. St. John of the Cross and St. Teresa of Avila the statues represent, of the Carmelite Order who was the reformer and of the statue of the Infant Jesus was the legendary first owner.
At the right hand side from behind the main altar can be entered in the Museum of the Infant Jesus. The entry is free here. The robes of Infant Jesus and other religious objects like the crosses, sculptures, chalices displays the museum. There are many different robes for the Infant Jesus statue, and there are total 46 robes.
