About El Fuerte de Samaipata, Bolivia:
In the mountain of the central Bolivia is a unique archaeological site is the El Fuerte de Samaipata. Carved with a wide range of geometric and animal figures it features a stone hill. As a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO it has been designed.

The history of El Fuerte de Samaipata:
As early as 300 AD by the people belonging to the Mojocoyas culture as the ritual and residential center the ancient site of Fuerte de Samaipata was occupied and used, and on the shaping of the great rock that work it was at this time. According to the Spanish priest Diego de Alcaya of the 17th century, by the Inca in the 14th century the site was occupied, as a provincial capital they made it. This have confirmed by the archaeological excavation that, around it with the monumental public buildings uncovering a central plaza and for agriculture terracing of the neighboring hillsides, of an Inca settlement all characteristics.

By the Spanish the site was first developed, it’s ‘El Fuerte’ which means ‘The Fort’ who dubbed. Beneath the ancient site in the valley in the 16th century the Spanish formed a colonial settlement which known as the town of Samaipata. Soon with vegetation the hilltop structures were covered and abandoned. Only by treasure hunters and herdsmen the ruins were visited after this, but of the place alive kept the memory by the local villagers. In the 18th century of scholars El Fuerte de Samaipata first came to the notice, and since the beginning of the 20th century it has been studied and excavated. Visited Samaipata twice the Erich von Daniken who is the unorthodox Swiss theorist, and concluded that, as a UFO launch site once used carved in the rock the two parallel running grooves.

What to see at the El Fuerte de Samaipata:
There are two sections in this archaeological site of Samaipata, high on the hill the stone carvings and to the south of the hill the residential area. For the ancient town of Samaipata the stone hill was the religious and ceremonial center. Fascinating carvings of snakes, cats, jaguars, other animals and designs of geometric features the reddish sandstone. An area of 220 meters by 5o meters or 1 ha roughly cover the carvings. On a circular base are the carvings of two cats on the western part, on Samaipata the only high-relief carvings.

Leading to the settlement below with two parallel conduits also includes a water tank the ceremonial area. From a UFO runway that von Daniken thinks there are the parallel grooves. There are smaller channels which cut in zigzag patterns between and alongside the parallel as El Dorso de la Serpiente what means The Snake’s Back this feature have dubbed the locals. Known as the Coro de los Sacerdotes (Choir of the Priests) is a curious seating arrangement at the highest point of the stone hill. In a circle in outside diameter which are 7 meters into the hilltop here 112 seats are deeply carved. There is another set of three seats within the circle of 12, back-to-back which are placed and toward the 12 seats face outward. Into the walls triangular and rectangular niches the circle includes. As the head of a cat probably represents a structure situated further to the east. With the sun in Inca religion were closely linked the felines and snakes.

By a series of at least five temples or sanctuaries was originally dominated most of the southern face of the rock, into their walls survive only the niches now. In size, shape and orientation these niches vary widely, but in the Inca period the temples were built and their design indicates that.
