The Bodhi Tree: The tree of Buddha’s Enlightenment

About the Bodhi Tree, Bodhgaya, India:
In Bodhgaya the Bodhi Tree (‘Tree of Awakening’) which also known as the Bo Tree under which the Siddhartha Gautama is attained enlightenment is the direct descendent of the tree. The ‘Enlightened One’ the Siddhartha Gautama became the Buddha that it was here after 49 days of meditation.


The history of the Bodhi Tree:
By accepting milk and honey from a young woman years of rigorous fasting and asceticism Siddhartha Gautama finally abandoned, according to the Buddhist tradition. Beneath the Bodhi Tree he then sat down and until he attained enlightenment vowed not to move. The concentrated meditation after 49 days and with Mara (illusion) several battles became the Buddha the Siddhartha who is the ‘Enlightened One’. For a week after his enlightenment in meditation the Buddha remained seated, then nearby for another week practiced walking meditation.


What to see at the Bodhi Tree:
As Ficus religiosa (holy fig) to the botanists the Bodhi Tree is known, in the Moraceae family a species of fig. somewhat unusual the leaves of the tree, with a distinctive extended (caudate) tip being chordate in shape. The Bodhi Tree which exists today it is not the exact one which 2,500 years ago shaded the Buddha’s meditation, but a direct descendent it may will be. In the 3rd century BC brought a branch of the Bodhi Tree to Sri Lanka by the Emperor Asoka’s daughter Sanghamitta and in Anuradhapura planted it, where still today it grows. Over the time the emperor spent at Bodhi Tree out of jealousy Asoka’s wife destroyed the original Bodhi Tree, according to the tradition.


In the 7th century the tree was destroyed according to the other accounts. But the original tree was destroyed and from the Sri Lanka tree using a shoot replanted, most of the reports agree that. After the enlightenment the path the Buddha walked by the Chankramanar is marked, which is the ‘Jewel Walk’, with 19 lotuses lined and on the north side of the temple of Mahabodhi is located. In the third week from a site nearby the Buddha contemplated the Bodhi Tree, by the Animeschalochana Stupa which is marked.


Pilgrimage of the Bodhi Tree:
With the enlightenment because of its close association, for all Buddhists which is the goal, great sacred and symbolic significance has the Bodhi Tree. For all Buddha’s (enlightened ones) attain enlightenment at which the site and the Bodhi Tree is the center of the world according to some Buddhists. In the early art of the Buddhist, to represent him was used as one of the symbols of the image of a tree before the image of Buddha was used.


Back to the monasteries and homes early pilgrims took seeds and leaves of the Bodhi Tree and throughout India and nearby countries sacred trees of the Bodhi Tree are likely the descendants. Still now in every Buddhist monastery it is customary to plant a Bodhi Tree of the dharma (Buddhist teachings) symbolize the presence. For the pilgrims to meditate at the Bodhgaya the Bodhi Tree is a favorite place and the Buddha’s teachings contemplate. At the sacred site many also leave offerings and hang prayer flags.
