After Part – 1
At Etretat Cliffs and Arches what to see and do:
The Falaise Aval –
There is the Aiguille needle rock which is 77 meters high at the Falaise Aval behind the arch. Here was hidden a treasure, according to the local legends and various stories which include a story of Arsene Lupin what was “The Hollow Needle” or in French “L’Aiguille Creuse”. Into the needle should have led a secret passage. In the last century or so to the elements of its height some has lost the needle that shows the historical photographs.
Into the rocks some hollow parts to enter make it possible the safety railings and the walkways. However, is not fenced off most of the area of the site and over the edge for whoever goes to a certain death of fairly it is a very long fall.
The Manneporte is to the southwest further into the ocean its trunk as an elephant dunking which described famously the Maupassant. At Etretat among the three arches this is the largest one, of the 18th century oyster beds the remains in the sea to see it is possible also En route.
The Manneporte arch beyond much in hiking there is little point, the route is to retrace back to the town as the best way. To the casual hikers is strictly off-limits to the cliffs adjacent the golf course. Around the golf course to hike it is possible but next to the sea is definitely the prettier route.
The Amont –
Seems a bit steeper of Falaise Amont to the top leading the path and stairs, to the town nearer especially. However, is fairly flat the landscape once up as at the Falaise Aval, of the town from the opposite end as similar views can enjoy the visitors from here but of course a third arch of seeing without the benefit.
Over the rocks here keeps guard the Chapelle Notre Dame de la Garde but noteworthy close up particularly is not the chapel. With the stone airplane the Nungesser et Coli the monument of white arrow-like also very prominent. In 1927 from Paris to New York the first non-stop flight who attempted to those two pilots of France are dedicated a small museum and the monument. Over the Etretat leaving France was last seen their plane which name was L’Oiseau Blanc (the White Bird) and presumably in the Atlantic Ocean somewhere was crashed.
Up to the Falaise Amont to drive it is possible. With blind corners the road is single lane with the long section and is also narrow, reverse or should give way of the red arrow in the direction traveling the drivers.
Few words:
The coastal resorts of Normandy and of the typical French trappings and entertainment all the things offers the Etretat. Some beautiful and some ugly buildings has the old town, side by side often and by neon signs adorned some building of half-timbered which are lovely. At the coastal resorts by the day trippers and holiday makers all demanded things offers the shops for the tourist and many restaurants.
