The history of the Jasna Gora Monastery:
A native of Poland the Pope John Paul II, of the Virgin Mary was fervent devotee and at Czestochowa of her icon. In 1979, 1983, 1991 and 1997 before the Black Madonna to pray he made pilgrimages. At Czestochowa his sixth World Youth Day he held in 1991, from across the Europe by 350,000 young people which was attended.

As well the “Queen of Poland” have honored other people. In 1717 of the image the miraculous nature officially recognized Pope Clement XI and in her honor a feast day designated the May 3 the Pope Pius Xi in 1925. On May 26, 2006 visited the shrine Pope Benedict XVI.

At the Jasna Gora Monastery what to see:
In Czestochowa dominates a hilltop of the Jasna Gora the large baroque monastery and with worshipers and pilgrims is bustling always. The monastery as pilgrims approach, the 106 meter belltower is the most striking site, in 1906 was reconstructed, from the 1714 dates the bottom part.

Four clocks contains the second level, on the each side one, with Marian melodies of each 15 minutes that mark the passage. There are statues of St. Paul the Hermit, the Saint Queen Hedvig, St. Casimir and St. Florian inside the third level, of the church fathers St. Ambrose, St. Augustine, St. Gregory and St. Leo the Great.

The monastery is the focus to Jasna Gora Monastery for the pilgrims, but it is the icon of Our Lady of Czestochowa, in the Chapel of the Black Madonna in an altar which is displayed. On her left arm holding the infant Jesus a serious Mary and with her right hand gesturing towards him shows the icon. Intense is the Virgin’s gaze, to look right at them she seems by the way pilgrims are moved.

With lilies are decorated the Virgin’s robe and mantle, for the Hungarian royal family the symbol. In a red tunic is dressed the infant Jesus and in his left hand holds a Bible and with his right a gesture of blessing makes. In bejeweled velvet robes are dressed the Virgin and Child and for special occasions gold crowns.

Hundreds of precious jewels decorated with in a gold frame the image has been placed, and an altar of ebony stands on and in 1650 by the Grand Chancellor George Ossolinski silver donated. With a floor to ceiling iron screen of the Chapel of the Black Madonna from the rest is separated the altar with the icon. Five other altars includes the large Gothic chapel, the Altar of the Crucifix is the most notable, of the icon to the right. From 1400 it cross dates. Left by grateful pilgrims of ex-votos are full the walls of the chapel.

The baroque basilica is attached to the Chapel of the Black Madonna, the church of Holy Cross and Nativity of Mary was named. Between 1692 and 1695 was rebuilt, of Our Lady of Czestochowa with accounts of the miracles decorated the ceiling and the three aisles which it has. Between 1725 and 1728 by the Italian artist Giacomo Antonio Buzzini was designed the main altar.
